Tidbits of Lingerie Terminology
Posted: 3/10/08Lingerie used to be easy to recognize. The terminology was familiar and common to most people. Basic words, even though French in nature, were readily understandable. Terms such as camisole, brassière, bustier and corset embraced catalogues, magazine covers and women’s chitchat.
But what about today? The terms are coming out faster with every latest style leaving us to ponder what is what. So here is a very brief list of some of the newer nuances in lingerie and a short definition for each.
Basque - also known as a “torsolette” and sometimes referred to as a “merry widow”. A basque is usually tight fitting and may or may not have a skirt attached.
Faja – A brand of shapewear from Columbia but many people are using the term interchangeably to mean all shapewear.
Compression Bra – A bra made to keep the breasts from moving about during activities. The fabric holds the breasts firmly against the body preventing range of movement.
Balconette Bra – A bra designed to lift the breasts and make them appear rounder. The straps tend to be wider than normal bras and the front usually is adorned.
Corselette – Usually a garment containing both the bra and girdle.
