Premier Designs Jewelry?
Am I missing something important here? I had never ever heard of the Premier Designs jewelry company until today, when one of our readers posted a comment on a previous article about Lia Sophia. Does anyone have more information about this, other than that they have a pretty small website located at premierdesigns.com?
*there used to be a picture here, but Premier Designs asked me to take it down. Is there ANYONE who can send me some copyright free Premier Designs Jewelry photos? If so: thanks in advance!
Apparently they’ve been around in the US for over 22 years… Anyone can enlighten me? And what does the bible have to do with the jewelry? :D ;-)
I am considering becoming a jeweler with Premier and have read the blogs. It seems that everyone is fairly new to Premier. Is there anyone out there who has been with the company for several years?
And what is the percentage rate of “drop-outs”?
What are the real pros and cons?
Thanks!
@ Annie – Robert Ham is the website I use! I did post it a while back and glad someone checked it out. They send their items fast! I hope you like their products. I need to remember to switch up my “thank you” gifts especially to groups that have been to a few of my parties. I’m sure they are getting tired of the stacks of jewelry pouches they’ve been collecting.
@ Dianne – I’ve been with Premier for 1 year and 5 months…not as long as others in my upline, but I have held over 50 shows and am one jeweler away from becoming a Builder. My Premier “mother” has been a jeweler for 2 years and my Premier “grandmother” has been a jeweler for 4 years. Our Premier “great -grandmother” has been a jeweler for over 10 years! I think you get what you put into it. I have to admit in the beginning, I didn’t want to sponsor anyone. I thought I would have to manage someone’s success and I didn’t want that responsibility, but once I figured out how my upline only motivates me and supports me, I soon realized that it wasn’t like that at all. I also “saw the light” after attending Rally last Summer. At that time, I was working on my 2nd jeweler and right after, I signed up my 3rd jeweler. I’ve noticed that since Rally and now that I do the purse game, I feel more confident about doing a show and I don’t spend an hour rehearsing what I’m going to say. I have had slow months but I haven’t thought about quitting the business. If I even think about it for a second, I usually get a call from a friend that wants to have a show! I would say that maybe a con would be the amount of money you need to spend for supplies, gifts, time, etc, but in any business, you need to make money to spend money. The pros would be that extra cash you can earn each month, the time away to spend with adults (I’m a stay at home mom, so this is a big plus for me!) and my Premier family. Only you can control your destiny and if you are passionate about the jewelry, it will show and people will get excited because you’re excited. It can be contagious!
@ Jessi – I would agree with Helen on her ideas. I would suggest just calling 3x time and move on. It can be either via email, phone or letter. You might want to check out Karen Phelps website. About once a month, she does a webinar where you can listen to her ideas on how to book shows whether you are selling Mary Kay, Avon or whatever. She basically says not to beg for a show, but to ask for a “favor”. “Can you do me a favor, I’m in a contest to get 6 home shows and I’m almost at my goal.” Or ask, “Would you like free jewelry and discounted jewelry at 1/2 price.” Something to that effect. I have noticed that this year has been a lot slower than last year because it was my first year as a jeweler and a lot of my friends and family had parties for me. Now, I’m doing shows for new people! But I’ve had one or two repeat hostesses and what’s nice is that they bring new friends! Good luck Jessi!
@ Mary – I had the same issue last year where I needed some fresh booking ideas. I had a couple of promotions.
1.) I paid the sales tax for the hostess so there was no excuse for them not to have a show. I did about 4 shows this way and only did it for one month. They couldn’t say, “I don’t have any money to do a show.”
2.) I would offer $25 on free jewelry and basically pay $12.50 out of pocket.
3.) Book a show and receive a beautiful necklace (from my retired pieces). I did one show with that offer.
4.) My newest one is “Receive the Key to my Heart necklace” and present it at my shows so they can see how it looks.
This blog has a lot of great ideas, so check out the older comments. I’m not sure about offering the 1/2 price items to the hostess only since she already can receive up to 8 items at half price after her show. What some jewelers may do is offer them 1/2 price if they say they’ll book a show from their friend’s show, but the only thing with this, is if they cancel after they book and don’t reschedule. Then they’ve purchased their item at 1/2 price and you lost your profit. I gave away a cool looking tote to a potential lead and she never rescheduled! Then 6 months later, I saw her at a friend’s show and she was carrying around the tote I gave her! I wanted to say, “nice bag”, but I just said hi and said to myself, at least she’s putting it to good use as a diaper bag for her newborn. But that taught me to offer them their gift at their show and show everyone what the hostess received as a “thank you.”
@ Helen – I also have my jewelry ready on my blouses prior to a show. I have to admit that I sort of stopped doing this for a few months, but was pretty consistent for a while. I just started putting all my combos in the only showcase I purchased from my upline and keep that separate. Once everyone sits down, I bring out my table display hanger holder, open up my case and start putting them on the blouses for the fashion show. This helps me remember which combos I use for my fashion show and keeps them separate from the others so it’s easy for me to pack and unpack. Using different types of shirts really does help give them a visual in how they can dress up their wardrope!
Anne;
That’s too bad about the 4+ hrs. show with nothing to show for it. I think some direct-sales consultants will do a show with no presentation thinking it will be easy. Who was it at Rally that said if you try to do this the easy way, it will be hard. But, if you put the work into it, it will be easy. Brilliant!
I reuse to be someone’s Bozo (entertainment) for the evening. This is a business. I take it very seriously. By staying protective of our business policies, we will be respected.
When I pull into my hostess’ driveway, I take a deep breath, ask God to direct my words that they are kind and respectful to all attendees, and then say outloud, “It’s about them.” There is no room for my personal life at a show.
If we go into a show with the decision that every show is the most important show we will ever do, then we will know we have given it our best effort. From me, they are getting a complete show with all the elements covered throroughly.
Sometimes I guess we have to learn the hard way.
@Dianne – My upline has been in Premier quite a while (years). They are very successful. I don’t know the drop out rate. If you call the 1-800 # for Premier, they may be able to answer that.
The pros are that you run your own business and no one tells you how to do it. You can work many hours or few hours and make your own schedule.
I suppose the con would be the initial start up fee but that seems low to me.
Anne
Good Morning, Ladies;
It’s always so nice to read all of your posts.
Let’s list our combos for the day.
Today, I’m wearing Chain Reaction framed by Silver Ice. McKenzie Earring, Knockout Bracelet, Chain Reaction Br., and lots of rings. I’m a ring gal.
If I was going to work today, I might omit Silver Ice N. and a ring or two. We’re going out to dinner and I want to ‘wow’ the staff. At the very least, I know I will look very fashionable and pulled together. Am wearing this on a dark teal, short-sleeved, close-fitting knit top. Very elegant.
I look at it this way: everyone wants to be us; they just don’t know it yet. ha, ha!!
No, this isn’t an informative post. Just having some ‘jewelry’ fun.
Keep sparkling! And, please, we’d love to hear what you are wearing today!!!
Lilly;
Awesome idea about using a separate show case for combos only. Keeps it all super neat and organized. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it.
What is a ‘table display hanger holder?’ Sounds interesting.
Old question that deserves revisiting often: how many trips do each of you make to get your show gear into the hostess’ home? It takes me about 3-4. It is simply too heavy to carry all at once. The rolling carts work if you are on pavement. Where I live, that’s pretty rare.
Some jewelers say they make it in one trip. I am fascinated by that. I have begun to eliminate some things from my show just to lighten up. The heavy items are the jewelry and the catalogs. One gal said she only takes 6 catalogs to each show. Her guests share them. Can’t get my head around that yet. I take 15 for guests (in my lapboards – inside each one is a cust. rec. and a guest survey) and 5 hostess packettes (each has 2 catalogs) so 25 catalogs in all. Yes, I take 5 host. packettes. I don’t want to have to make another trip when I book more than 3 shows. Think I will keep a box or container in my care for the extra host. pkts. and catalogs. Arghh……..I’ll get it, eventually.
One jeweler says she puts no catalogs in the host. pkts. As she books, she picks them up from around the room and fills the pkts. that way. Great idea.
Food for thought: I have noticed that the jewelers who have been in PD the longest have the simplest shows. That could be our ‘sign!’ They present minimal amounts of jewelry and keep the show clean and elegant. hmmmm
I also love reading everyone’s comments!
@Helen – I appreciate what you said about respecting relationships above our business. I could be hurt that a few of my close friends haven’t yet booked shows, but I just tell myself that they have other things going on and perhaps stuff that I don’t know about. My relationship with them is more important than any business I can get from their hosting a show.
Yesterday I had what I hope is the worst show of my Premier career. Over an hour drive (one way), kids outnumbered the adult ladies (including 4 curious toddlers!!), and ZERO sales! I did get 1 booking. This is only my 6th show so I know it can only get better from here! And my other shows have been awesome. :)
My current favorite combo is Truffle and Arabian Nights. :)
I received the mini purses I ordered from Robert Ham today. They are great! They have a zipper and a snap closure and come in a bunch of colors. I’m excited to use them with Helen’s idea of putting the name of a piece of jewelry in the bag as their “prize”" for booking a show.
@Helen: Today I’m wearing Annette pendant on Chic necklace (without Chic pendant); McKenzie earrings (I love these); Bedazzled bracelet. I forgot to put on rings! This pendant/necklace combo is one I’ve been wearing often because it matches everything. Someone usually comments on it.
Regarding fashion show: I use the “Amy” stand up mannequin that you can buy on the Premier Incentives website for my fashion show. I don’t know about the table top thing with different blouses. I’m interested in how it’s done. What do you hang the blouses on?
I purchased the table display stand from Robert Ham a while back and really like using it versus my old standing mannequin. Here is the link with a picture of it. http://www.robertham.com/p-9165-extendible-hook-stand.aspx
What I have been doing is taking the stand (which you can dis-ensemble), I place it on a folding table like one of those t.v trays and I place (4) different colored blouses on the hook. I bought the tray at Walmart for $15 and it’s wider, longer and not as heavy as a t.v tray. It’s not top heavy or anything like that. Then what I do, is I use that table to place my stuff that I plan on using for the show, like my lap boards, my pens, the paper plates I use for the Create A Diva game and my props for the price is right game. Then, when I’m done with the fashion show, I remove the stand, place it on the floor or somewhere else and behind it, I have my stacks of gold boxes ready for the price is right game. It’s great because the guests can’t see what I have behind the blouses until I remove it.
In response to Helen’s question, I do two trips or sometimes one when I have two rolling carts and I roll them out on each hand. I’ve also been using (5) necklace stands that hold 6 or 12 pieces and I store them in a large pink leopard tote bag that can easily fit the 5 stands. So all I have to do is open up the back and stand them on the table. I would love to do just one trip, but I don’t think that’s possible with all the jewelry and catalogs I have.
I do have a question which I need some advice on. I’m doing a party on Friday and so far the hostess has 30 RSVP. We’ll see if it’ll happen, but if it does, which game do you think would be more fun. I plan on doing the purse game since I’ve really enjoyed that game and the create a diva as an ice breaker, but I was wondering if I should do the Price is Right or Play or Pass. I haven’t done the Play or Pass game in a long time, but after reading Helen’s posting, I might try it. Do you all think I would get more bookings if I have the hostess go around and ask people to play or pass? I have 15 lipstick purses and 15 mini purses from Robert Ham that I can use to place names of the pieces I will give out or should I just use the gold boxes? I need suggestions!!!!!
PS: Create A Diva game is really fun as well. I give each person a paper place and a pen. I tell them that I want to know how creative they are, how well they can work under pressure and if they know how to accessorize. I show them a picture of a stick figure woman with curly hair, face, shoes, hands, etc. I tell them they have 30 seconds to draw their stick figure and I joke about how they don’t have to draw like Van Gogh, but just something. Right when they think they’re gonna be able to keep the plate on their lap and draw, I tell them, “but here’s the catch, you have to place the plate on your head and draw.” I get a couple of “what? no way!”, then I count to 30 and right when I say stop, I tell them not to move their pen or bring down their plate, but a few usually do. I then tell them, “okay, now add earrings where you think the earrings should be!”. They get such a laugh because their drawings look like something a 4 year old would do. They show the person stting next to them and just laugh and you can hear someone say, “what’s that?” or “where are her eyes.” I then have the hostess go around and pick the one that has the earrings closest to her ears and I give the winner a little prize. Try it at home. That’s how I knew it would be fun.
Hi Everyone – I love reading everyone’s ideas/experiences!
@Kristen – Sorry about your show. It reminds me of my recent flop of a show! Hopefully it will be the worst in my Premier career as well!
I’m interested in the table top blouse hanger….where do you get one?
Today I wore Silverado with Fabulous Finds pendant layered with Metal Works doubled. It looks really good all together.
I am new to Premier. I was 2 shows short of getting my quick start incentive. I need bookings. I have made a few phone calls. Several people have said that they have to check their schedule, but have not called me back. How do you suggest that I go about getting bookings?
Hi, Girls;
I have written several fairly long posts answering your questions and they disappear. So sad. Put a lot of time into them but I’ve read where others have had the same problem.
Maybe we’re timed?
Kristen;
So sorry about your show but I would venture a guess we’ve all had some less-than-desired results. Goes with the territory. You’ll have a great story to tell from stage some day! I put Truffle and Arabian Nights together for my upcoming show combos. Thanks.
Anne;
Is your manequin front heavy? Does she fall over easily? My last one always fell over if you didn’t hold it tightly. Saturday I’m getting a new one. I love Chic and Annette so together I’ll bet they’re beautiful. Thanks for the tip.
Lilly;
Don’t know how to advise you on game choice. Go with your gut. I am using your plate Diva this Sunday. Can’t wait! And you are wearing what combo today?
I have on Global N., E., & Br. along with the Mali Br., Cinema & Granda rings.
Anne:
I did the 7 Days of the Week Neclace using Silverado as my base. Fun
Kristen: I emailed you the Story time link and script.
@Lilly .. I love the paper plate game … and then they can win a pair of earrings from my retired box … WOOHOO
Hi I’m also a new jeweler and I was wondering what the price us right game is. I’m familiar with play or pass but I’ve never heard of the price us right game.
Well, I did my show last night with 23 women and all I can say are these two things….have the hostess be in the actual room rather than going around and filling up everyone’s beverage and checking on the food and the other, have a booking activity. I made the mistake of not doing one last night and I didn’t get one booking! I have 3 maybes, but nothing on my calendar. I’m kicking myself right now even though the show was $635 in sales, I didn’t do the price is right like I usually do. I had it all set up, but looking at the crowd and especially this one woman that kept talking and talking throughout the whole presentation, I decided not to do it. I talked about the hostess plan, I even showed everyone the beautiful Key to my heart necklace as a booking incentive, but nothing. This one lady was the only bad apple. She even said, “oh no, not the plate game, I hate doing this at baby shower’s…oh now what? I have to get my purse out?”. I tell ya, that really gets me off track and I think it’s rude when someone is constantly negative like that. Everyone else seemed to have a fun time and I got a lot of chuckles with the Create a Diva game. Oh well, now I need to figure something out for my October calendar! Good luck to you all!
Regarding the Price is Right game, you can check it out at the Draper website.
Lily .. How did your show go on Friday night .. DID YOU HAVE 30 GUESTS? I had 7 at my show which was ok … 15 RSVPed but only seven showed up. I got 2 bookings and I have another show this afternoon .. a mystery hostess. I am 2 show short of making my 6 for quick start. I have been feeling discouraged because I recently moved to the Dallas area and I don’t have many connections. I am so open to suggestions if anybody has them.
I have decided to put off the open house idea for a bit. I am offering a free watch to my hostess if she books a show before Oct 2nd as the 4th is my cut off for my quick start.
I wanted to share with you a fantastic website from my upline
http://www.howmayiserveyou.com
Have a fantastic day …
India
@Helen: My mannequin isn’t front heavy although came unscrewed so I used superglue to make it permanent! I like the table top hanger idea. When I earn some more money maybe I’ll get it!
@Michelle: I’ve seen the Price Is Right Game on the training video I received from my sponsor. If yours gave you a notebook with DVD’s, it’s on there. I haven’t tried it yet.
@Lilly: The paper plate game sounds like a lot of fun…I’ll have to try it.
@Tonya: Regarding getting bookings….I wish I knew!!
Ladies;
I bought a mirrored neclace board (it looks just like the cardboard black-flocked neck boards) only it’s make of acrylic and it’s mirrored. Holds about 8 neclaces. They come in different sizes.
Saw it being used on a display at training – it made the neclaces pop! You could see the neclace as you were putting it on. Wow. May get another one at that price.
Also, I’m back to using my manequin. I prefer it over the hangers.
@Lilly: Sorry about your show. I feel like that with certain groups where I can pick up on their disinterest and it throws me off track and I don’t do what I should. I had one with probably 20 ladies and not one booking although the sales were high. I left kicking myself and wanting to cry.
@India: Thank you, thank you for that website!! It is great!
Hi everyone,
@Tonya, there’s a great handout called “80 1/2 ways to get bookings” on the Terrell web site (http://www.howmayiserveyou.com/bookings).
In my limited experience with this so far, it seems best to get bookings by both doing an activity AND asking each lady as they check out. I have a little sign on my display table that says “If I don’t ask if you want to receive jewelry for free, your shipping is free.” I also offered a friend $25 for every booking she had lined up before the show started. I won’t do this again since it’s expensive, but is a good way to jump start by having your friends do a little work for you.
I’ve also booked a couple shows after the show by simply following up with phone/email. It’s slower that way but can be effective. Some ladies simply don’t want to/can’t commit at the show.
@Lily – Sorry to hear about your show and the chatty lady. :) The same thing happened when I had 20 guests. Seems there’s less energy around bookings when the show is larger – ladies make their purchase and move on. When this happens again, I’m going to offer a separate raffle prize – maybe retired jewelry – when 3 ladies book a show. It also helps when they have something small to take home with them. Right now I’m offering $2 fall colored tote bags.
Wishing you all success with bookings this fall – I understand it’s Premier’s busiest season!!
@Helen – where did you get the mirrored display board? Thanks for the idea! To answer your previous question, I typically go from car to the door in 1 trip, but I have less jewelry than some of you – and no display cases right now.
@Lily
OMG I played create a diva and it was such a hit. Thanks for the idea
India;
Hang tough, kiddo. You’re doing great!
Question: if you have not completed your quick start, does that mean you are fairly new? If so, do you have retired jewelry already?
Well my only show for this month (this Thursday) was cancelled today. The hostess had 8 people coming and didn’t feel like that was enough. I assured her it would be fine but she cancelled anyway. I am so disappointed and have no other prospects. Right now I’m feeling like stopping. I hear about my sponsor who got 11 bookings from her renewal show and I just don’t understand how I have so few.
Anne;
Please don’t despair! I, too, have had times where I had absolutely no bookings only to go to a training and hear jewelers get up and say they had a $50,000.00 with 45 bookings! Please. It’s so hard to hear but if truth be told I think everyone has had these kinds of experiences.
I’ve heard some jewelers say they’ve had fantastic renewal shows and others can’t believe the low turnouts, etc. I think every dog has it’s day in the sun. You will have yours if you don’t stop.
Gals, as far as having a disruptive guest, I have learned (the very hard way) that guests like that usually just need more attention. Find something about her that would be great for modeling one of your combos and ask if she would mind coming up so you can put it on her. Or, I’ll tease her and say something like, “Oh, Mary, you’ll probably have the best drawing of all. Are you artistic? Gotta tell the truth.”
Teasing them with compliments may give her what she needs. Take her under your wing and make it a goal to befriend her. You’d be surprised at what happens. Talking directly to them is very effective.
I’m not saying it’s always effective, but after years of dealing with a wide variety of people, you learn what to do. There is nothing wrong with you.
If you just can’t get anywhere with her, remember, YOU are the professional. YOU have the jewelry she wants. YOU are going home with ALL the jewelry.
This is your business. Don’t give anyone permission to take over. Believe me, most of the women are feeling sorry for you when they see this happen.
Mirrored neclace board: try on-line or see if there is a Store Fixture Supply business in a large city nearby. Almost every town has one but the names are probably different.
This neclace board will eliminate my need to carry mirrors. Two birds with one stone!
@ Anne: Please don’t give up! I know how you feel. Call your upline or your “grandmother” and ask for words of encouragement. That’s what I did after my Friday night show. I called her up the next morning and told her how I was so mad at the one lady who kept drinking and because of her how I didn’t bother doing the booking game for fear she’d ruin it. My “grandmother” basically had me look at the bright side. Since my mother, sister and neice were at the party as well, she said, maybe it was meant for your family to have a good time instead. I suppose so…I can look at it that way. She told me that before she leaves her driveway, she prays to God for guidance and to at least enrich someone’s life at the party. My sponsor told me the other day that she has 10 shows lined up for October! I only have one! But I do have some prospects that haven’t committed yet. Here is an idea for you. I did this last year. I had my husband send an evite (I wrote it) and had him invite his buddies over last December to watch hockey, have pizza and do some xmas shopping for their girlfriends, spouses, mother, etc. It was great! I made about $500 in sales and once I received their order, I wrapped it up for them and they came to pick up their present. See if you can have your brother, husband, boyfriend, whatever book a party for you and if you want, make it a co-ed and maybe you’ll get some bookings out of it. Whatever you do, don’t give up. Have faith and be strong! Believe, you are not alone and we are all here to help you!
Thanks everyone for your words of encouragment. After that last Friday show, I had another one on Sunday and it went well. She had 7 women and the sales were about average, but no bookings again….I must be losing my touch! However, this particular family has had 4 parties between them all. It started with one girl, then her aunt had a party, then the girl’s mom had a party (which is were I met my 2nd jeweler), then this girl’s sister had hers. Oh yah, and the girl’s mom’s friend had one last month! Now, the girl’s mom is thinking of joining!!! The only problem is that she speaks Spanish and I speak Spanglish! I need to find a jeweler out there that can forward some fun Spanish speaking ice breakers to pass to her for when she starts her business. I know I’m jumping the gun by saying “her business”, but she asked me to get her the paperwork, so if all goes well, this will make 4!!!! For these women on my downline and myself, I can’t give up! Good luck everyone…I’m so happy I found this blog over a year ago!!!
Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement! I went to training last night and met a woman who moved here from Kentucky and didn’t know anyone and “jump started” her business. She went to local banks and told them she would open an account for her business if someone at the bank would have a jewelry party. I wouldn’t have thought of that. Now I have to get the courage up to do something like that!
I am thinking of becoming a “jewelry lady.” I went to my first jewelry party Monday night. I love the jewelry and I would love to make some extra money. I am fine with the $395 start up fee. It is hard to swallow the $750 jewelry package. My major concern is paying and then the jewelry being retired and then having to buy all new jewelry. How often does the jewelry retire?? Has anyone been successful by just buying maybe 15 pieces to show as samples? Very interested but a little nervous. Thanks in advance for all advice.
Does anyone know of any jewelers out there that are only accepting checks as payment since they aren’t familiar with Propay? Basically doing everything “old school” if you will. I’m just wondering how hard would it be for a new jeweler to do Premier with limited computer skills? I don’t want my prospect to feel overwhelmed, but I also want them to know how easy it still can be for them to place orders even if they don’t have hood and house or are unable to process credit cards over the net. I do everything via Hood and House and just can’t imagine mailing the order forms, but I do want to know if there are jewelers who are still doing it and if it’s still working for them. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Has anyone started doing their ‘Christmas’ shows yet? I’m struggling with that concept. I’d prefer to get through Halloween, at least, before I start with the ‘Ho, Ho, Ho.’ That’s just me and it’s probably not very business-like.
At my next show I will begin using my gold tablecloth (replacing the blue one until the new year) for fall. As of Nov. 1st I will begin using my red cloth.
Now, even though, I won’t have oranaments on my table yet, I will be talking about how hosting a show gives you a jump start on your holiday shopping for free and half price.
I like the idea of using a Christmas stocking for drawings. That’s cute! I personally have a ‘decoration’ rule. I allow myself exactly one quart-size ziplock baggie to hold the decorations for any given month. Ex: My January baggie has large white wooden glittery snowflakes. That’s all. I don’t need a gob-o-stuff to haul to each show for decoration. You can take the appropriate fashion scarves (color to match season) and make rosettes to soften your display and make it look beautiful w/o heavy bulky stuff to haul. Can’t take credit for any of these ideas – I’m the official idea stealer!!!! ha
My February baggie has ceramic red hearts (they were wedding favors that we got to take home) and my red table cloth. Perfect.
March baggie: large wooden shamrocks and tiny shamrock garland.
April: wooden umbrellas
May: Mother’s Day magnets
June: Father’s Day magnets
July: red/white/blue flat hats, etc.
Aug: back-to-school stuff
Sept. Labor Day
Oct. Halloween
Nov. Thanksgiving/Christmas
Dec. Christmas stuff
@ Crystal. Work within your budget. I purchased the Gold package and basically paid it off within 6 shows since I had everything charged on the Premier Card. My three jewelers paid the $395 fee, then grew their display after they completed the Quickstart. My first jeweler signed up during the Double Quickstart which gave her $400 instead of $200 so she was able to pick a lot of jewelry. When I purchased mine, it was good for a year, then after Rally, only 10 pieces were retired. That’s not that bad. I will use those to sell at a sample show or use as hostess “thank you” gifts. I would suggest that you do purchase what you plan on wearing and maybe a few items that you wouldn’t since women wear so many different types of jewelry. It’s always nice to get out of your comfort zone. I have heard a lot of my clients tell me that it’s nice to have the jewelry because it looks so much better than in the catalog. I do have to admit that I haven’t worn a few of the times that came with my package because 1.) I didn’t get to pick them out and 2.) they’re not my style, but I have sold a few of those pieces. Maybe invest in the Silver package instead. There are a lot of nice pieces and it’s 1/2 the price, plus it’s also a tax write off! If you have any questions, let me know! Good luck!
Crystal:
Good questions. You do not have to start with the gold or silver packages, but it sure makes it easier. 15 or pieces to start may be difficult but not impossible. Maybe you could borrow 30 or so pieces from your upline for your debut. It is very difficult to continue to loan out jewelry because the loaner has to then possibly wash, and then put all those pieces back.
I am very choosy about where my jewelry goes. I’ve got so much invested.
Every May, PD retires about 150 pcs. Replacement pcs. are then introduced in July at Rally. I’m beginning to believe that more is less when it comes to the # of pcs. in your display. I have about 300+ and it is way too much. I am trying to sell off as much as possible. Very heavy.
If I had it to do over again, I would have started with the Pres. pkg., and then only allowed myself to either win the new stuff, or limited myself to 10-15 new pcs. each time. It takes tremendous discipline to limit yourself b/c it’s all so beautiful. And, yes, you then have to find creative ways to sell off the retired stuff. See your sponsor for that training.
Lilly;
Actually, I’m thinking of taking no more checks as of Jan. 1st. Many direct sales companies are doing away w/checks. It’s all about having them bounce.
I may go to strickly cash or credit. I thought since everyone is going to on-line forms of pmt. anyway, it shouldn’t come as a shock. Still need to think it over and get counsel upline.
Hi everyone,
@Helen – thanks for your ideas/thoughts on holiday decor. Do you put out decorations at every show? I can’t get my head around Christmas in September (or Oct!) I’ll be rolling out some leaf display plates at my fall shows with some pumpkin accents. Planning an “Ugly Necklace” party with a PartyLite friend for Halloween weekend – should be fun. I’ve been thinking about quality of shows versus quantity. We hear a lot about having 8-10 shows on our books – I’d rather have 4 great shows than 8 that are ho-hum. Thinking about how to network, hostess coach, and follow up to make every show worth my time. Can you tell I’ve had a couple of doozies? :)
Anne – sounds like you are encouraged after your recent training. Happy for you. Cheers!
@Crystal: I have heard of jewelers buying pieces vs. a package. My sponsor has one woman who did that. The idea behind the silver or gold packages is it’s the top selling jewelry and Premier tracks all of that so they know what sells. I wouldn’t have had a clue what would be top sellers. I bought the $475 package and it seemed like a lot of jewelry to start with.
@Lilly: Anyone I talk to accepts credit through Propay. Propay is really simple and the initial start up is something like $35 I think. I don’t do Hood & House so I don’t know about that.
@Helen: I never thought of decorating the table or using different colored table cloths! My sponsor told me to use black (or a dark color) and I never thought of changing it! I’m very compliant! I just follow what I’m told! I think I’ll get more creative. That’s if I can get a booking!
Kristen;
I prefer to call it ‘theme’ instead of decoratons. In other words, my table usually has a quiet theme for each month or quarter.
Jan. a few flat wooden glittery snowflakes on my blue table cloth (looks like frozen ice – pretty)
Feb. – several red ceramic hearts on my red table cloth
March – wooden shamrock and tiny garland on blue cloth
Apr. – toss a few tiny flat umbrellas on the talbe
May – a small fancy picture frame of ‘Mother’ and a Mother’s Day stand-up table logo
June – same as above for Dad (we do have a nice wallet an watch for Dads)
July – 4th of July stuff
Aug. – teacher/school stuff
Sept. – a fewpretty silk leaves on my gold table cloth
Oct. – Halloween stuff (be creative but limit the amt. of stuff)
Nov. – a tiny cornucopia on my gold cloth, also the word Thanksgiving as a wooden stand-up logo
Dec. – very tiny Christmas tree, etc.
Each month’s decorations (theme) must fit into one qt. size baggie. It’s all I allow myself to carry, so, no, I won’t be putting ornaments on my table – too bulky. I figure the hostess’ home will already be decorated.
My daughter is into scrapbooking. She is making a ‘door hanger’ for me to take to my jewelry shows and hang on the door as I arrive. We’re not sure what it will say yet, maybe ‘Divas Welcome,’ or ‘Bling Bling,’ or whatever. Still working on it.
My main thing is to streamline every part of my business.
Kristen;
I hate to break these responses up, but so often I respond to all of you and it never appears and I’ve spent a ton-o-time crafting my answers.
I hear you on the idea of 4 quality shows/mo. vs. 8-10 whatever shows/mo; but here’s what I’ve learned so far – you just never know what you will come up against. I’ve worked like crazy and it just doesn’t seem to matter. So much is out of our control – the hostess is the one who holds the cards. I’m really starting to understand ‘hostess coaching.’ We absolutely cannot slack in that area. It’s so tempting to just toss them the host. pkt. and say, “See ya’ in a month.”
Now, wouldn’t it be great if she took the initiative and did all that was necessary to have a good show? You know, actually read her host. pkt. contents – read the host. pkt. itself? That’s the kind of hostess I am, but I realize good hostesses are jewels (no pun intended).
I love the idea of having a renewal show every year. It makes us realize what our hostesses go through and it’s a wake up call, for sure.
I’ve tried just booking 4/mo., but the odds of them all holding and then the odds of them all being quality – well, I think you know the answer to that.
Anne;
It took me a long time to change even one aspect of my display. I used a black tablecloth only for 2 years. It took seeing the displays that are done each month at training to open up my eyes. They are so beautiful and creative.
I have not one artistic cell in my body, so changing anything is just out for me. The first time I changed the tablecloth, I felt like King Kong. It grew from there.
It’s kind of like the first time you put together a new combo. Wow. You suddenly realize you can do it, too. You don’t always have to wait for Tandy’s combo list to arrive in your e-mail. Woo-hoo!
But I’ve also come to realize that just b/c you can, does not always make it prudent, i.e., you still want to be careful it all looks professional and beautiful and attractive. Stroll thru your local mall and really take notice of the jewelry stores and their displays. You will notice they keep it to a bare minimum. hmmmmm………….seems they want the emphasis on the jewelry.
We are taught to have our displays up in 30 min. or less. Good advice. You are being watched during your set-up whether the hostess is busy or not.
It takes me every bit of 30 min. and that’s b/c I push myself constantly. When I walk in the door, I greet the hostess, of course, and chit chat for a brief minute; but then, I get down to it. I look at my watch and give myself a mental, “Go!” and I fly. I AlWAYS time myself setting up and tearing down.
That may seem a bit extreme, but you’d be surprised at how you can be continually disrupted by little things and the set-up seems to go on forever.
All my jewelry is in the black-flocked divider trays inside the 1 or 2″ trays that come in the purple-padded jewelry case you get w/the Pres. Pkg. I simply pull out those trays and lay them on the table on top of my table cloth. I do not lay each pc. on the table itself. Way too time-consuming. I open up my show-cases, take a few extra neclaces and hang them on the corners of the show-cases to soften them, and lay a neclace or two on the table in front of the cases (or sometimes I put some earrings or bracelets there, too.)
As for the trays on the table, if they are extra full, I’ll pull a few pieces and lay them around the trays to soften. My table is usually very full of jewelry and that’s why I have very few decorations.
Remember, you still have to find a place for checkout and mentally go thru your tote to make sure you have what you need. Then find a place where you will actually do your presentation. I set out my manequin, combo trays, catalog tote, show outline binder, prizes, hostess gift, etc.
And then, if I still have even one minute, I quickly scan my show outline to calm myself. I take a deep breath and declare ‘show time.’
By then, the guests are usually arriving. You must greet them as soon as possible and begin that relationship. Help them with their name tags. I ask how to spell their first names (even if I already know – you’d be surprise how they are sometimes different) and then ask them to please pick out a combo they would like to model. If they are reluctant,I ask them if they would just hold a few pieces during the show. They are usually very cooperative.
I watch the time closely and urge the hostess to get started. They are usually very tempted to wait for Aunt Mary who is always late; but I tell them, we’ll just do itros, etc. so she is usually O.K. with that.
And the show begins. I discreetly watch the time. It’s so easy to be up there jaw-jacking for an hour. Cut yourself off by 30 min. So what if you are not done. THEY ARE!!!!!!
Release them to shop!
Sorry for so many posts but I want to get this out before it disappears.
When my presentation is done, I hand them the lapboards w/catalog, cust. rec., and guest survey. I ask them to fill out the survey first for a drawing (I need to see who wants to book ASAP!).
Then I look at my watch deliverately in front of them and say this: “Ladies, it’s 8:00 (or whatever). I’ll leave my jewelry out for 45 min. and then I must put it away. The jewelry is there for you to try on. Enjoy.”
That’s it. I give them 45 min. and no more. I don’t announce that the time is up. I simply go over to the display and very gently begin to put things away. That usually gets them going to finish up. I don’t want to be there all night.
From the time I start putting things away, I want to be in my car in 45 min. It’s a tough gig, but I am adament.
Yes, sometimes the hostess or a guest will want to visit but I keep moving. I do not want to be the last one there.
Helen – thank you for your thoughtful posts. It is helpful to learn from someone who has been doing this for a while. I agree – hostess coaching is key to make a show worthwhile. It doesn’t have to be a meeting in her home – just some meaningful phone chats or a “hello” in person. Last night I went to a fundraiser and it was fun to see ladies proudly wearing their Premier bling – even the main performer (sporting the Laura ensemble). I was able to greet previous customers and touch base with 2 who have shows this fall. Getting out of the “warm” market is scary – in fact my two non-warm shows were “non shows”, which just emphasizes the importance of hostess coaching. :)
P.S. I LOVE the idea of making a sign to hang on the door. That is so fun! Will have to do that eventually!
I am excited to have come across these comments, I was awake until wee hours of the morning soaking it all in!! I signed up in May and then had to have major surgery in June, I didnt make my quick start but have been able to have enough in catalog sales to make the payment for the PD loan. I held a few Mystery Hostess shows in my home and that helped me get some practice too! my ‘mom’ is in another state and I have only had the training I got from my kit….I have done sales before but feel all alone. I am going to a round up next weekend. Starting to book shows, have two for October and a promotion at a model home as well. My fiance is on board and very helpful, I am excited to have this opportunity! I have done alot of on line networking on facebook, since I recently moved, I dont have many friends (warm market) so I have met a lot of women business owners that way.
Looking forward to sharing ideas….
Kristen;
I will be anxiously waiting to hear how your ‘Ugly Neclace’ party goes. I think everyone on here wants to know.
Ladies;
I want to be very open here. A few days ago I seriously thought I was going to take a few months off of doing shows. Had a low day and the idea of another show was overwhelming. Another jeweler helped me out by doing my show for me. Thank God for her. I had another show a few days later and felt more like myself. I admit this for this reason: we are emotional beings, and it’s easy to get discouraged. I must take my own advice and ‘sleep on it’ a few days before I ever do anything drastic.
After my last show, I simply couldn’t believe I ever thought of not doing shows any more. I love my hostesses and met some of the sweetest women I’ll ever know. I love this jewelry and feel beautiful when I wear it. I love the combos, my upline, my crossline, etc.
It seriously does not bother me if there is a low turnout and/or low retail. It’s just part of the job. Circkle K’s have off nights, too, as does every other retail establishment on the planet, if they would be honest about it.
So, today, I’m excited to be in Premier. Tonight is training. I need it.
Today’s combo: Cabo N. w/Cabo enh., Fashionista W. silver band, Mali br., Lizzie e. (my face is too round to wear Companions) and lots of rings.
I so love to come here and read all of your comments. Please don’t stop posting. We need each other.
Kristen;
Could you please describe your fundraiser in detail? How did you come upon the idea to the actual carrying it out? How did it pan out? Everything. We are very curious.
What do all of you do when customes wear their jewelry in the shower and it becomes tarnished, then they ask for it to be replaced? I tell them not to wear it to shower or swim or sleep or exercise or hairspray. They do it anyway and then want it replaced. I want to give good customer service so I replace it but technically it doesn’t fall under “manufacturer’s defect.”
@ Helen: Thank you for your honesty. I haven’t thought about quitting, but I have been bummed at the low turnout of bookings month to month. Last year was busy, but I know it was because it was my first year and everyone wanted to help get my business started. I have a friend that is also a jeweler and doing quite well. She really got into a good group of women that love jewelry so her sales have been awesome, not to mention, she’s been getting 3 bookings at each show. I haven’t…and sometimes I wonder if it’s me or what. I told my sister about my issue and she said that perhaps it’s not meant to be for me to have so many shows because then I’ll be leaving my two toddlers with the babysitter all the time because my husband works a lot of evenings. Then, this morning, I was listening the BLC call and one of the things that caught my ear was how to say “No.” Meaning, us women whether we are moms, married, single, busy, career focused, whatever. It’s okay for us to say “No” sometimes if we are feeling overwhelmed or over-worked. I tend to do too much. I try to play with my kids, but then I think about checking my email, then the laundry buzzer goes off or I look at the sink and see too many dishes. I then put the BLC call and what my sister said together and tell myself, “maybe 2 or 3 shows is all you need in order to make some extra income and to stay focus on my children.” I think God does have a plan and this is it. Well, that’s what I’m telling myself to make me feel better…and I’m stickin’ to it!
@ Anne: I’m sure some of the pieces I’ve returned have been due to lack of care and I’m sure they have broken the 5 s’s. But, it’s hard to prove, so I just return them to Premier and so far, they haven’t said anything. I would just keep telling people that they need to take care of them and think of their jewelry like their favorite pair of shoes. If they wear them every single day, they are going to get worn out if they are not cared for properly.
Not combos today…I’m wearing Radiance and love it!
Oops – sorry, wasn’t all that clear. This wasn’t a fundraiser that I planned – it was one that I attended (with warm market people). It was a small group – 50 or so people – but 5-6 ladies I saw were wearing their bling.
I got the Ugly Necklace idea on either the Draper or Terrell web sites. Basically ladies wear the ugliest necklace they find in their jewelry box to get a prize. Ladies vote to pick the ugliest necklace. Then they get to try on some fun new Premier necklaces. We picked Halloween weekend cause it seemed to match the ugly necklace idea. We’ll have treat bags and maybe play Jewelry Bingo – lots of people have played the Purse Game recently so I want to mix it up.
Helen – How is Hood and House working for you? I’m thinking of getting it. It sounds like you’re way more encouraged after a few days of rest.
I went to training tonight – awesome and so helpful/encouraging!
Anne;
PD tells us we have to make the call. You will usually know when something is not a manufacturer’s defect, but really, if they are demanding a new piece, you pretty much have to do it for them.
I would stress this: be absolutely certain you get that $5 + tax BEFORE you process the piece. Be very friendly but firm and say, ” Oh, Susie, I understand and I will take care of that for you. Please drop it in the mail along with a check for the $5+ tax and as soon as I receive it, I’ll process it.”
Don’t back away from the $5 issue. It’s a downhill slide if you do. If you don’t charge her, who can you charge? Word gets around quickly that you do it for free.
I’ve had to get very firm about this. I was losing $ on the R/E’s. If you do happen to pay for one, be sure to take is as an expense on your taxes. But understand, a write off is an expense first and out of $5 you might recover $1. Write-offs are not dollar for dollar the way most people think.
I have been amazed at the condition of some of the jewelry I get as a R/E. Looks like it got run over by a tractor. We must be diligent to cover jewelry care at our shows. Doesn’t mean they’ll do it, but we must cover it.
Showering does not turn or tarnish jewelry. It’s just not good to subject it to the chemicals in soaps and shampoos. I don’ know how to get people to take better care of it. Sometimes I think the guarantee sort of relieves people of being a little more careful.
But remember, the Golden Guarantee is what sets PD apart. They don’t/won’t get that at Target. The retail stores give you just so many days for returns. Look at the back of every receipt you get and get to the know the store policies in your area so you can speak authoritatively about it at your shows.
I’m looking at the back of a Wal-Mart receipt right now, and guess what? No return info anywhere on the receipt. Now, that’s interesting.
