Maternity wear has come a long way since those outlandish tent dresses and ugly elastic pants. Everything from maternity lingerie to eveningwear now comes in designer labels. And the newest garment for pregnant women is the birthing line of clothing. Comfortable tops and practical skirts are made specifically for that time during intense labor.

Typically the pregnant lady enters the hospital and the attendants are quick to clothe her in a hospital gown with which is fine on the front but the back is blowing in the wind, baring all. As if giving birth was not enough of a trial, now the woman must show her bottom to the world as she awaits her new baby. Frustrated with the indiscreet circumstances, Carrie Grimditch decided to make herself a birthing skirt. She then made skirts for other pregnant women and subsequently, Carrie and Kimberly Taylor formed BINSI Inc, the labor and birth apparel company.

Such a simple notion but when you see the pregnant models wearing the cropped tops, tankinis and skirts, they actually look quite fashionable. Women are able to move around the hospital while waiting for the birth of their babies and at the same time doctors and nurses can easily monitor their condition without the intrusion of regular clothing. The newest pieces in the collection are the BINSI® Bamboo made from bamboo and organic cotton with a hint of spandex to hold its cute shape. A comfortable style with below belly fit, breathable fabric with wicking properties, and sexy side slits for optimal movement, coupled with the matching tankini, you would never know the woman was about to give birth.

It is hard to believe that expectant mothers can look fashionable up to and during labor!

Well, I have seen and heard enough and it is time for me to weigh-in on the maternity lingerie debate and nursing in public issue. While I agree that where to nurse a baby is not really about lingerie, recent news in Canada has made it newsworthy on a lingerie site. If you are not aware, several lingerie stores have felt the need to bar women from nursing their babies. Further, this whole “scandal” regarding pictures and mannequins showing maternity lingerie is beyond my comprehension.

I believe in free speech. I believe in respecting other people’s morals and customs. But I knew this was the final straw when I read an article expressing the ridiculous behaviour of people against pregnant women. Apparently, UK lingerie shopkeeper Amanda Bare received a backlash when she dared to place a pregnant mannequin wearing HOTmilk lingerie in her shop window.

Now I must admit, I do not care for the name of the brand. I think the name is a little too bawdy for such a lovely product but the point is the stockist was trying to show pregnant women a line of undergarments that was completely appropriate to their needs. For the same reason that I rebel against “skinny-minny” types modelling plus size bathing suits, I rebel against regular mannequins wearing lingerie made for expectant mothers. What use is the lingerie hanging on a rack hidden away from who needs it the most?

With all the bonafide trash out there, I do not see any reason to bash beautiful things like nursing a baby in a lingerie store, where I might add is predominantly visited by females, and trying to ruin a lady’s legitimate lingerie business by forcing her to hide her luxury inventory. And if you remember, when HOTmilk first launched, they were met with some criticism for sending out pornographic material. Are you kidding me? I ask again. “Who wants to see a regular model wearing lingerie made for pregnant women?”

Maybe I should have another baby so I can join this fight for motherhood!
