Bob Mackie has been dressing the stars for over forty years. Probably best known for his work on the Carol Burnett Show in the sixties and seventies, Bob has also provided costumes and gowns for Bette Midler, Elton John, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Eva Longoria and Jada Pinkett Smith (read up here!). But his outfits for Cher are legendary. At a time when television censorship was high, Mackie created sexy and risqué costumes worn by Cher on The Sonny and Cher Show showing her bare navel, excessively deep necklines, and low hip hugger pants.

Aside from the comical skits and hit songs, The Sonny and Cher Show was a huge success as millions of people tuned in weekly just to get a glimpse of Cher’s ensembles. Now, sixty-two years old, she continues to hold successful concerts all the while Bob continues to wow her audiences with his famous Cher creations. Her current three-year engagement at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas has given them both the opportunity to show these marvelous designs on such a great body.

And apparently, the finale of the show displays one costume that begs to be seen! A tiny nude outfit made of diamonds sitting in the right places projecting the illusion that everything can be seen when in fact, nothing can be seen. According to Bob, it “looks as though Cher was dipped in glue then rolled in diamonds”. As if Cher was not naked enough with her other spectacular outfits, she told Bob that she wanted something more naked to wear when she sings her song “Believe”.

Orchid is Tiffany & Co’s new collection of jewelry, a design collaboration with Frank Gehry, who is arguably one of the greatest architects of all time. The pieces, both feminine and sensual, were inspired by the graceful and exotic bloom it was named for. According to the luxe jewelry retailer, the designs “capture every twirl and droop of the mystical flower.”

The new collection includes delicate pendants, drop earrings and brooches, each crafted in fine sterling silver, or 18k yellow and white gold with pave diamonds.

If the gold and diamond pieces are a bit beyond your budget (prices go up to $6,800 for the 18k gold, diamond-paved designs,) try the Sterling Silver pieces (prices start at $125) they are just as lovely as their gold counterparts. I particularly love the Double Orchid Drop Earrings in Sterling Silver ($495 at Tiffany.com). They are just so elegant and stylish, with graceful 2.5” silver dangling orchid drops, like smooth metal curlicues that catch the light when you move. These earrings are glam enough for a night out (in a little black dress, maybe?) but also understated enough to be worn casually.

If you haven’t heard of Richard Florida’s book “The Rise of the Creative Class,” the basic premise is that cities that can attract artists, jewelers, and other types of creative people end up becoming major centers of culture. This, in turn, spurs economic growth and wealth. This seems to be true like in places like Antwerp, Belgium, where creative folk fashion diamonds and fashion rings for the elite buyers. It is considered one of the world’s most creative cities. While, at first, it doesn’t appear to have a connection to wealth within a city, Florida’s best-selling book makes a strong case for not only seeking out these types of industries, but also patronizing and supporting local artists within urban design plans. This book explains how the creative class is not just responsible for innovations in art and fashion, but they contribute greatly to the success and innovation of a city’s cultural climate. A city with a great many creative boutiques can attract wealth simply through the excitement of art and fashion. This applies to individual jewelers who create gorgeous jewelry with diamonds as much as it does to the fashion boutiques that promote and sell fashion rings and luxury wear.

As we begin to appreciate the value of the creative class and support their endeavors, there can be a renaissance of creative thinking, free expression, and ultimately cultural tolerance within the society. This may not be what comes to mind when you are out buying your first diamond ring or deciding on what designer outfit to purchase, but it is all part of the same package. By supporting the boutiques of fashion and jewelry, one is making an investment in a city’s future ability to attract more of the creative class and thus, helping to promote future economic growth.
